Poppy Cascade at St Michael's Church

We aimed for over 4000 Knitted or Crocheted Poppies to create a Remembrance Cascade down St Michael's Church Tower.  We exceeded this with approximately 5000 Poppies!

A huge thank you to everyone who knitted or crocheted a poppy

We asked people to make and donate poppies to form the cascade in January 2025 and we are truly grateful to the congregation, Sew U Knit Crafts and Broadway Crafters, the village and those beyond including a few who posted poppies from Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Wales and holidaying in the area from America who also joined in.

We ask for poppies to be at least 4” diameter so they didn’t fall through the net and maximum 12”. Having larger poppies means there is less stitching on. We asked for poppies to be made preferably in acrylic yarn. This means that the cascade can dry out quicker when it gets wet and will be less heavy than with wool or cotton yarn.  (We took advice from Wellesbourne Parish Church and are grateful for all the help and advice received.)

Once we had enough poppies we approached Ian Michael and Duncan to help put the cascade onto the church.  We found out we had a 68ft Tower so we could then purchase the netting locally from Cotswold Building Supplies.

The netting was at the back of church we asked for help sewing the poppies onto the netting.  It took over 350 hours to sew 5000 poppies onto the netting.

Ian Michael and his team then came on 30th October 2025 to put up the cascade onto the tower of St Michael's Church.

On 1st November our local schools St Mary's RC Primary School and Broadway First School along with Sarah Beasley worked on a display inside the church to remember the animals to were also part of the World Wars.  Both schools will also join us and take part in the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial in Broadway on 11th November at 10.50am.

We also will be hosting the Alcester Male Voice Choir for a Concert in St Michael's Church on 15th November at 7pm.  Tickets are £15 and can be bought here or on the door.

Thank you to everyone for your help - it's been so wonderful to see so much interaction and good will towards a village project to honour of those who died for our country - We will remember them!

Any proceeds will go to The Royal British Legion and St Michael's Church, Broadway - you can donate in church or online  -
